teacher is on the list. not much of a surprise there. after all, I started this blog to destress after driving from work. actually writing about teaching would be entirely too stressful...

Frozen Yogurt Swirler

Frozen Yogurt Swirler

To work as a frozen yogurt swirler is a huge responsibility (in Beacon Hill, where the light posts are made out of licorice). You must be a well-rounded individual, one that can balance (and lift) 80 pounds but can still manage the more subtle demands of following leadership (do what I say, damnit!) and writing a cover letter to acquire said position. Super lolz. Hope you enjoy cleaning...

Super impressive Wellington Station (orange line)

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of visiting the Wellington Station to have dinner at Not Your Average Joe's with a couple friends (and hubby, of course). Why NYAJ @ Wellington?

1. No wait. On a Friday night. No BS.
2. Easy parking.
3. Easy drive from Main St. in Medford. No road rage there.
4. Same food as in Arlington.
5. WOW--Look, Ma! A beautiful planned community...
6. near Everett/Revere/Malden?!?!?!

whoa.

Researching this post, I stumbled upon Yelp reviews of Wellington Station, some outdated:

I hate you, Wellington Station. I hate you with the passion of a thousand fiery burning suns. I hate how you are situated on a busy road and make the walk from my apartment to you a harrowing ordeal. I hate how your buses don't coordinate with your subway schedules. I hate having to pay tree fitty when I want to park my car. I hate having to take a bus from you to my apartment. I will not miss you when I'm living in the city and can easily walk from the train to my apartment.

Super LOLZ...that's all I can say about THAT post!

Here's a current picture of a place you can RENT @ Wellington:

This is an excellent T stop on the Orange Line that's off the highway and super close to Boston with a large outdoor parking lot.

We went here on a Sunday and the lot was practically deserted. It was a very quick walk inside the station and the train came after a few minutes.

This was especially nice since there were problems on the Green Line that we completely avoided by going Orange.

I've been to Alewife which is enormous and indoor parking garages are never fun. Depending on where you're headed, it's nice to park at a T stop rather than take the Commuter Rail -- especially on the weekend -- or attempt to find (reasonably priced) parking in Boston.

I'll use this station regularly as I've found Oak Grove to be a bit in the middle of nowhere and the Alewife area is confusing.

For every good review, there is always a disgruntled customer. Luckily, this review is outdated:

Parking garage is separated from the the T station by tracks.

No problem right, just have a walkway? NOPE. POS tram system plagued commuters for years (constantly breaking down), and with no other choice but to walk, well, that's not much fun.

Finally they are replacing this with a walkway, which will be done...oh, well, I guess it was supposed to be done by now, but alas, you must rely on shuttle buses (if they show up).

Basically you pay to park, then you walk yourself over to the station (along the fells). Thanks, but no thanks.

*UPDATE*
Tram is finally dead, and there is a walkway now.

Although I have eaten only once at Wellington, I can tell you that I will definitely check out this Medford gem in the future...let me know if you've ever visited!

So, after a long apartment hunt, I found one in Medford that I adore and am getting ready to move into.

What are my must-dos in our city? How can I avoid looking like the "new guy?"

Welcome! To be a local Medfordian... eh, I'm still figuring it out after seven years myself. Here are some things to really get you in the mood:

-- Complain loudly if you have to walk more than a block after you park your car
-- Don't shovel your sidewalk after a snowstorm. Medfordians love to take their lives in their hands walking in the street, really!
-- don't vote in city elections

On a more optimistic note:
-- a secret gem is the Elizabeth Grady training center on Boston Ave. More for chicks than guys, but all services 1/2 off!!
-- Danish Pastry House is amazing.
-- Moulton's Seafood is about half the price of Legal's and just as good. Just ignore the wacky decor and the scary exterior.
-- Mystic Coffee Roasters recently made me the best cappucino I've ever had in my life.
-- Chilli Garden's Sczechuan food is to die for.

Oh, you want retail? We don't have that. Though I'm fond of the creepiness of the Meadow Glen Mall... an existential dead zone.

In Response to Re: So, I'm new to town... help me become a local:
You'll also want to head up to Jims Market on Fulton St. near Carr Park and get a B-boy (ham, cheese & egg) sandwich. This summer get passes for Wrights Pond & Tufts Pool, go food shopping at FoodMaster on Salem St. Haines Sq. , ice cream @ Colleens in the square, and along the way you'll need to try all the pizza & chinese food places so you can discuss with others why you like one over the other.

If you go shopping at Foodmaster, don't call it "Foodmaster". You have to call it "Johnnie's"

Hi Joe,

Definitely join the medfordmass Yahoo group.
Find the Medford Arts Council on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/medfordartscouncil
And look for the Medford Square Farmers Market this summer.

And I second the votes for Bob's on Main Street and for the Middlesex Fells!

Local happenings around my area

I'm starting to come back to an uneasy peace with my drive to Sharon. My first posts were ways of dealing with my crappy commute, and now things are getting better. I've started leaving the house earlier (like I did before I hit May--ask any teacher, and they will understand my sentiment). Since I'm less stressed, I am starting to focus on driving less on the weekends to balance out my weekdays. Before you feel too sorry for the struggling long distance driving part time working orchestra teacher, remember that I *only* drive to Sharon an average of four times per week. Wait a second, I'm only a *20%* teacher (1/5 the salary of a normal teacher, in layman's terms). Forget it, feel as sorry for me as you please...

Enjoy locally themed posts!
